River floating (Buffalo)
No canoes, no kayaks, no sun bathers, just miles of long smooth pools filled with fish, broken by the occasional rapids.
I recall a floating trip with my father (Charles), Grandfather (Jeff), and brother (Daniel) on the Buffalo River in the mid-1950's. For three days we floated on old Navy surplus rubber rafts, fishing the pools, and shooting the rapids. Camping on the sand banks overnight and cooking our days catch.
In three days on the river, we NEVER saw one person. We would see john boats abandoned on the banks or broken by a recent flood water, and hear an occasional cow bell or moo.
It was a wonderful time and there are very few places left like it was in those days.
